On Friday, April 3rd, the Empower Team and Greenwich CARP held a Korean Cultural Event on the grounds of Greenwich University. The event introduced guests to CARP activities while sharing insights into Korea’s language, culture, and history.
Team leader Erika G., supported by Hayoung J., spoke eloquently about the origins of Hangul. Created by King Sejong the Great during the Joseon Dynasty, this modern Korean alphabet was designed as a simple yet logical phonetic system accessible to all levels of society. This democratization of literacy, along with the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919 and the Hallyu (Korean Wave) of the 1990s, are arguably the major influences that shaped the Korea we know today.
Internally, the hand of Providence has guided Korea to be the birthplace of the returning Messiah and the Mother of Peace, spearheading the creation of an ideal world—a process that is still unfolding and requires the fulfilment of human responsibility.
The presentation was followed by a geography quiz and questions on K-pop and K-drama. Some students identified songs by just the first few bars, demonstrating the global popularity of Korean culture. Afterwards, guests had the opportunity to try on beautiful hanbok attire, and the event concluded with a delicious selection of Korean street food and comfort dishes.
Despite the university room booking being unavailable due to the Easter break, the Greenwich CARP and Empower teams remained undaunted. Accustomed to such logistical challenges, they redirected invitees to an outdoor venue and hosted a superb event. There were 26 participants in total, with many guests so engaged they were reluctant to leave—some even arriving 30 minutes after the official finish!
